The Heroic Journey - Week 6 Fantasy

The Hobbit - Week 6 Fantasy

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien is a great classic work that uses the heroic journey formula. The use of the formula in classic works like the Hobbit make the story exciting, like a whimsical child-like adventure. A story that people of all ages can honestly enjoy. Current media and story telling I believe we are losing that wonder when the writer stays to heavy true to the formula.

Though a fan favorite I would consider ‘Voltron’ a lacking narrative that stays too close to the heroic journey formula. The show stays so true that the plot becomes to predictable. There is no sense of anxiety when the team of hero fights a villain. It all just becomes too typical. Even when the main character Shrio is faced with death and a whole season he is “dead” his return was predictable. We as consumers of media have become too aware of the heroic formula for writers to use it directly. Not only that but with advancing technology we can take in much more media then before thus yarning for something new. Something we haven’t seen already. When creators stick to formulas it is only too apparent. It needs a different spin to captures peoples interest.  If writers want to keep the our generations attention then they need to expand on literary devises not use them as a crutch.
